Robots and Rabbits

I have been doing a lot of travelling around lately; I was working in Portland for a few weeks and then flew to the East Coast to spend a week with my brother and his family at their new home in Virginia. Then, before coming back to Portland, I made a quick trip to San Francisco to attend the wrap [READ MORE…]

Pixar Blogs

One of the many things that amazes me about working freelance at PIXAR is seeing the employees work at such a high level during the day, and yet somehow find time and energy to excel in their own projects and personal lives as well (I have never figured out how to do all three; If I work hard at one [READ MORE…]

Dan Lee Tribute

Randall Sly has put up a small ONLINE TRIBUTE to the late, great DAN LEE at the always interesting Character Design Blog. Many people here in the Bay Area animation community knew and loved Dan, but for those of you who may not have heard of him, he was one of the main character designers at Pixar, doing some GREAT [READ MORE…]

Ratatouille

Last weekend I put on my moth-eaten old suit and walked the few blocks from my apartment to the San Francisco Masonic Hall, to watch a screening of Ratatouille, the latest PIXAR film. Later, at the Wrap-party, I was surrounded by co-workers and friends, all dressed-up, wearing huge grins on their faces. It wasn’t only the champagne making them smile; [READ MORE…]

In Your Face

The recent tribute for Dan Lee, which was a combination book-launch and gallery-show, was well attended. Here you can see Derek (surrounded by jealous pals) proudly showing off a piece he bought by Ronnie del Carmen. For more pictures and information about the show itself you can read Ronnie and Enrico’s reports, and of course, if you want to buy [READ MORE…]

Joe Ranft

I just heard some very bad news this morning. Joe Ranft, the original, and many would say the best, “Head of Story” died yesterday in a car accident. It is really very sad indeed. Many of the best animated films of the last few decades bear his stamp. The NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS and TOY STORY, to name some obvious examples. [READ MORE…]

Dan Lee sketch book

If you are a longtime reader of my blog you may remember my earlier post about Dan Lee, the much-loved and multi-talented Pixar character designer who died earlier this year after a long battle with cancer. Or perhaps you’ve heard of him from other sources, or seen his work in those wonderful “Art of” books.¬†Even away from work he was [READ MORE…]

Dan Lee

After a long battle with cancer that got into his lungs, Dan Lee died this last weekend. He was only 35 years old. I worked with him recently at Pixar where he was one of the main character designers, but we first met at Colossal Pictures back in the mid 1990’s. I believe that Colossal was the first place he [READ MORE…]

The INCREDIBLES

On Saturday night I was lucky enough to attend the wrap party for the latest film from Pixar, Brad Bird’s THE INCREDIBLES. It was a lot of fun seeing all the (usually extremely casually dressed) Pixar folk dressed up in fancy clothes and having a good time. I have been eagerly looking forward to seeing this movie ever since I [READ MORE…]
