A lot of the the projects that I’ve worked on in the past few years are still in production, or are in some weird political limbo. Either way it means that I can’t show any work that I’ve done on them.

A rare example of some recent storyboard work that I can actually show because the project has been finished, is a sequence of boards from the CG short film Huberts Brain which has been added to the “Storyboard” section.

I’ve also added some new stuff to the Design section. Most of it is conceptual character design done when I went freelance a few years ago.

Samples from a project that I have been working on for a while have been added to the newly expanded and re-arranged “comics” section, under the COSMO link on the side menu. It is tentatively titled “Cosmo: Dog from Planet Rex” and will hopefully some day become a children’s book, or perhaps a comic. Also, in the “Folio” section there is some more new stuff, so look around a bit.. The Links page has some new entries. Check out Ralph McQuarrie’s official site. Speaking of links, I’ve added a “Banners” section to the main menu, so if anyone wants to link to me and likes to use banners, I now have a few to choose from. I will add some desktop wallpaper patterns, and other downloadable stuff later on.

This is an image from the “Field Guide to Gomers” which was Maverix studios’ hot seller at last year’s Comic Con and one of the wares that we hawked from the Maverix table at the APE convention here in San Francisco last weekend.

Once again Bosco Derek and I valiantly tried to push out books on a room full of people whose attention was elsewhere. This time we were joined by Anson Jew, who had a lot of product to push; issues #1 and #2 of “Saturday Nite” as well as a neat little color mini-comic that he made at home on his printer. We will also be manning a booth at wonder-con in Oakland (from April 19th) and again at theComic-con in San Diego (from August 1st)

The Links page has been updated and re-arranged. I found a proper link to Moebius’ site, added a different fan-site for Ronnie del Carmen and also added a link to Enrico Casarossa‘s site. He is a contributor to “Monkeysuit” the cool comics anthology publisher, and their link is on there now as well.

For the time being my work at Pixar is done. I had a great time working with Ronnie del Carmen and his story team, and now I’m back at Maverix after a quiet time off over the holidays.

At the request of ILM, artwork from the cancelled Frankenstein project, that I had done in 1998, has been taken down. You can see something that I worked on at ILM by watching “Work in Progress”. I designed the goofy Chihuahua/Giraffe critter at the end.

I didn’t do a new card this year so here my Christmas postcard from last year (I’ve not posted it here before so hopefully that is OK!). I hope that you have a happy Christmas, Kwanza, Hanuka, Winter Solstice, or whichever celebration whatever you like!

2001: The Year in Review
Here are some personal perspectives on this past twelve months.

Highlight: Finally making a self-published comic. Lord knows why I waited so long. the 3 months that I spent at Maverix Studios pounding away on Nerve Bomb issue #zero was one of the most satisfying personal creative periods for me, ever. Bosco, Derek and I just knuckled down, during a dry spell in paid work, and really worked hard on some PERSONAL projects for a change, and the enthusiasm of each of us fed the other. The follow up, taking them to the San Diego Comic Con and selling them and getting feedback from other artists, was truly satsfying. I got a special kick out of giving copies to some of my art heroes such as Mike Mignola.

Low Point: Obviously the September 11th attacks. Proving that a small group of individuals really can change the world… but sadly in this case they didn’t make it a better place. This event overshadowed everything, even the good stuff. This year will be remembered by all of us for quite some time to come.

Nerve Bomb In my spare time I continue to fiddle about on my website, and have begun to build an alternate site for my personal stuff. It is still a work in progress but you can check it out at www.nervebomb.com. Bear in mind that there will be some repetition of artwork; I’m still figuring out the navigation.

I am still working at PIXAR doing some freelance storyboarding on Andrew Stanton’s new movie “Finding Nemo”. That will probably take me up untill the end of the year.

When not watching the horrifying TV News just like everyone else, I’ve been working for PIXAR doing some freelance storyboarding. Just prior to that I was doing a little concept work for Wild Brain.

Website fiddling continues as before. I’m trying to learn how to use Javascript now.

For the past few weeks I’ve been reworking my website after having messed it up by some unqualified fiddling about. Hopefully it is a little simpler now, and I’ve reduced the file sizes of a lot of the art so that it will load quicker. I’m almost done with the resizing, and I’ve begun to add some new pieces.

Currently I only have one movie in my animation section. Check back soon when I’ve done some more uploading, there will be at least 3 movies in there soon.

I’m also working on building another site called NERVE BOMB, which is the name of the comic that I self-published earlier this year. When it is finished, I’ll move the stuff currently housed in the “projects” part of my portfolio to that that site. That will leave this site as purely my professional work.

On the subject of Nerve Bomb, Derek and Bosco and I still have boxes of the comics that we self published for the San Diego convention cluttering up the halls, so if anyone is interested in taking some of this quality merchandise off of our hands don’t be shy with those wallets.

The folks at Maverix, namely Sho and Vaughn, have also been retooling their sites as well so check those out, but bear in mind that they are still tweaking bits and pieces. Hopefully Bosco will get to finishing off his site next.

Maverix is pretty quiet at the moment as Robert is in London, Sho is preparing to go, and Derek is at the burning man. Patrick Awa, Chris petrocchi and Sam Hood will be keeping their seats warm while they are away.
