Dave>> thanks for your comment about JON. It is nice to hear from another of his apprentices.

See you in San Diego! (with a finished version of AFC, I hope)

Awesome to see you giving Kudos to the big J. Ya know, without Jon I wouldn't have gotten ANY real animation training. He was THE BEST at production animation. He could burn through scenes and still put quality in every drawing. See you at Comic Con!

Blogfoot>> Welcome, and thanks for posting.

Yes, Colossal was a great place to work. I made a lot of good friends at that company, and to make it even more fun, two of my best pals from Australia came over to work there too (Simon and Chris, mentioned above) so there was a lot of fun to be had, day after day. For those of us with short attention spans the variety of projects was fantastic. Commercials, (both animated and live-action) games, TV-series, special-effects, puppets, stop-motion you name it. I never worked any place else where I had so much fun while learning so much.

It was a sad time when they went out of business...

Nice post indeed. I knew you worked at Hanna Barbara, but didn't know you worked at "Colossal PIctures." That's cool.

John>>A great thing about the internet is that we are now able to learn about talented people from all over the world. It is a wonderful asset to our animation/cartoonist community.

But I was recently thinking about how many great people I know of, who have worked away for years and are still relatively unknown, simply because they DON'T have websites. That includes a lot of the people I looked up to when I started out. I don't know why they still resist having websites... maybe it is a generational thing? (They are 10 years older than I am, and I am a geezer myself). But I'm in no position to point fingers; I got in on the website thing relatively early (since 2000) but I still don't have a celphone...

The other thing I was thinking about, is how many super-talented people there are, who may spend the majority of their careers working on obscure projects. Some people equate the quality of the project with the talent of the crew but in my experience that isn't the case at all.

Anyway, that is what inspired this post.

Great post. That definitely is the best part about this business. All of the great people you can meet, and the unexpected learning about our craft that goes along with it.

There are so many amazingly talented artists in this industry that no one has ever heard of. Thanks for shining a spotlight on a couple more.

Aw man, now I'm starting to get all nostalgic.

SHO>> Yes, I took each of the pictures. You can see more like that in my PHOTO section (including a lot more of Simon and Chris taken at different times and places). There is a mix of travel photos and shots of my family and friends. I have been digging them out of boxes and scanning them recently, as part of the "wallowing in nostalgia" phase I am going through.

J>> I was very lucky to work with, and learn from Deane at a time when the state of the animation biz was otherwise pretty grim. Without the inspiration of Deane (and these other guys) it would have been easy to give up altogether.

Roque>>I'm glad that you liked this post. Stay tuned: In future I will post about more artists who have influenced me directly, from periods later in my career.
