The PreZident

Here’s a painting I did for my pal Mike. I did it in acrylics on masonite. I’ve never really used acrylics before, and I had some fun painting it. Cracked my own-self up as a matter of fact.

Anyway, It’s a character from the Superhero Party. He is going to appear in an upcoming Rocket Rabbit story, though I’m trying to think of a new name…

He’s a retired superhero who becomes the Prezident, and parties harder than Clinton when he comes to town. Rocket and the Professor have to keep an eye on him, try to keep him out of trouble, and clean up after him once he’s done partying hard.

To the right is an actual photo of him, taken back in the days when he fought under the name AMERICAN DREAM:

OH, for the love of MIKE!

Last night there was a fund raiser for MIKE MURNANE who needs eye-surgery after an accident while playing “paint-ball”. The Maverix Studios crew hosted an art-auction where a variety of artwork donated by Mike’s friends was bid on by a variety of folks, friends and strangers alike. I donated some sketches from my latest sketchbook including this picture of Sephilina the Nauti Girl:

The event was well attended, with most, but not neccessarilly all in attendance being friends of Mike. The evening started off pretty restrained with people strolling around nibbling cheese and appraising the artwork.

Later on as the 10PM cut-off for bidding approached, people dropped the cool-cat demeanor, there was a flurry of bidding, and some pieces attracted keen competition. In particular, some pieces by Rhode attracted some heated attention, His Pablo’s Inferno print and his Portrait of Mike’s character CHIME.

After epic check-book battling, and holding off the competition with lots of fierce eye-contact and smack-talking, I managed to snag the highly prized painting “Chime” by Rhode. I also put in bids for (and won) some sweet pieces by Bosco and Vaughn.

Once the dust cleared, lots of contented folks sauntered off with pictures and a fair amount of money had been raised towards Mike’s surgery! Combined with some money raised at an earlier garage sale, the Maverix Studios crew has so far raised around $6000.

Apparently there will be similar fund-raising efforts organised by Mike’s pals at ILM. Obviously every litlle bit will help as Mike is unfortunately without medical insurance, and his costs are likely to be quite high.

Gourmet Gruel version 3.0

I am in the process of adding the latest sketchbook to my online store. (click on the cover image for a preview of some pages).

It is already available at Bud Plant, both as a one shot or as part of a 3-pack. So if you were planning on buying something else from Bud Plant then it maybe you could buy some of my books from him.

Otherwise I’d be happy to relieve you of your money myself, in my own online store

The Ugly Truckling

My buddy David Gordon’s charming new children’s book, THE UGLY TRUCKLING just got a nice review in the NEW YORK TIMES. I’ve seen the book on display in lots of bookstores, so if you want to pick up a copy for your kids it shouldn’t be hard to find. Or you could try Amazon there is a short interview with the man himself at the Harper Collins website.

Poison Ivy

Check out this wonderful piece by TONY SALMONS

For even more art by the man check out the DRAWING BOARD threads here and here

Devil Girl

This is a sketch that I did for Dave Morris at the 2004 San Diego con. It’s done with a pink Tombow brush pen.

Dave has a nice site where he posts sketches he has collected over the years, from a variety of different artists, including some big shots, so check it out for some stuff that you may not have seen published elsewhere.

In addition to the sketch for Dave’s Devil Girls gallery, I did another (Nauti Girl) sketch in 2002 for his his dancing girls gallery.
